Maneka Gandhi shuts down animal centre temporarily after video of cruelty against dog | India News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: BJP leader Maneka Gandhi on Saturday announced her decision to shut down the Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre in Delhi “for a complete overhaul” in light of an incident of cruelty against a rescue dog.
A video started circulating on July 5 on social media which showed a dog being beaten up by an employee of Sanjay Gandhi Animal Care Centre in Delhi, which is run by the BJP leader.
The incident led to an outrage on various social media platforms with people asking Maneka and the authorities to take action against the culprits.

In her statement, Maneka said the dog bit the para-vet, who responded with “frightful violence”.
“This incident has shocked us all to the core – I have been personally seething with rage and have been sick to my stomach since I watched the horrifying video. We immediately filed an FIR against the para-vets and they have been arrested. The doctor in-charge of the section has been given a notice to leave. But this is not enough,” said Maneka.
The former Union minister said she will rebuild the facility and provide the staff with animal-sensitivity training.
“It is time to re-build this institution from the ground-up, and ensure that such an incident is never repeated again,” she said.
